Fine Arts Council Conference in Beautiful Canmore, October 2015

From October 22nd to 24th 2015, enjoy a rejuvenating getaway and build your mind for creativity. This year's fine arts conference will be held at the Coast Canmore Hotel and Conference Centre in the heart of Canmore Alberta. We have a great line up of professional artists! Louise Chong with mixed media assemblage, Sue Harvie with Orff inspirations and Joey B. with hip hop dance will be returning, along with a great selection of new presenters with sessions from zen tangles and ukeleles to nuno felting and stage combat!

Included with your choice of sessions will be a thursday welcome evening, friday night banquet with entertainment as well as snacks and lunches throughout the days with a variety of cuisine to fit your dietary needs. We are also collecting a sizable amount of excellent door prizes to be given away!

Grade 1/2 Shaker Experiment

Grade 1/2 students have been building and decorating their very own eggs shakers! This may seem like a crafty little activity. And for sure, students are excited to get into the paint and get their hands dirty as they try to manage holding and painting a 3D object. But not only is this a great fine-motor activity, it began as a scientific experiment in making predictions. Students were shown a variety of different materials and asked to make a hypothesis about what material would make the best sound inside a shaker. They were then given the materials to test and make observations, which became a language arts lesson in itself. Finally, students made their conclusions and began the construction of their egg. To see the pride, and to listen to their plans of how they will use them is exciting. The following sessions are $15 each, from 4:30-6:00pm at David Thompson Middle School and East Lake School in Chestermere. March 23rd - Metaphorical Masks with Jill Winters: create dramatic masks and learn how they can be an excellent start-of-year project to build your classroom community. April 5th - Self Portrait Bean Bag Puppets with Wendy Passmore: create your lucky doppleganger to practice self-reflection and sewing skills! April 5th - Introduction to Watercolour with Shannon Roy: bring painting into your classroom in a functional way.
